When you take a seat at NaNoi, you're not just served a delicious meal — you're also offered a taste of Thai culture. In Thailand, dining is not merely about food; it's about togetherness, sharing, and respect — for the meal, the ingredients, and each other. It’s an experience that goes beyond taste – it’s a way of life. At our restaurant in the heart of Antwerp, we try to bring that philosophy to you in a warm and accessible way.
Sharing is standard
In Thai dining culture, sharing dishes is the norm. All dishes are served at the same time, and everyone eats from several shared plates. It creates a lively, connected experience where you get to taste a bit of everything. At NaNoi, we gladly offer this way of dining: you choose a few dishes, and we serve them in the middle of the table for everyone to share. Prefer to eat individually? That’s of course perfectly fine – we’re flexible in how you enjoy our kitchen.
Utensils: spoon and fork
Unlike in the West, where people usually eat with a knife and fork, Thai people typically use a spoon and fork. The fork is used to push food onto the spoon, which is then used to eat. Knives are rarely necessary, as ingredients are already cut into bite-sized pieces.
At NaNoi, we set the table with a knife and fork by default, as that’s what most Western guests are used to. But of course, you can always ask for a spoon – we’re happy to provide whatever makes you most comfortable. Comfort and respect for tradition go hand in hand here.
Respect at the table
Politeness and respect are essential in Thai dining culture. Elders or honored guests usually begin the meal first. It's also considered polite to take small portions first and go back for more only when your plate is empty. That’s why at NaNoi, we serve rice in small portions. Would you like more? Just ask our staff – we’re happy to refill your white rice. This way, it stays warm and fresh, and we help prevent food waste. Eating loudly or poking dishes with chopsticks is considered impolite.
More than just food
A Thai meal is a social moment, a time to share stories, laugh together and unwind. The pace is slower; you taste, you enjoy. We try to recreate that atmosphere at NaNoi, so you feel as if you’ve stepped into a little corner of Thailand. The combination of flavors, aromas, presentation, and hospitality turns every meal into a small journey.
Did you know...?
- Thai dishes are rarely served in courses – everything arrives at the table at once.
- In Thailand, it's customary to leave a little rice on your plate as a sign of gratitude – though at NaNoi, feel free to finish every bite!
- Soup is often sipped straight from the bowl, without a spoon.
- Chopsticks are uncommon in Thailand except for noodle dishes with Chinese influence.
- A simple Thai expression to show appreciation is "Aroi mak" – it means "very tasty!"
Want to experience the real Thai atmosphere? Try sharing dishes with your tablemates. And feel free to ask us for suggestions – we’re happy to help you match flavors beautifully.
Next week, we’ll dive deeper into the world of flavors with Episode 2: The Balance of Thai Flavors – Sweet, Sour, Salty & Spicy.
Until then – enjoy your meal!
